Calf Reduction with Botox: Best Non-Surgical Treatment

Beauty Preferences in Asia – Slender Legs: Non-Surgical Calf Reduction

Beauty ideals are subjective and can vary considerably from one culture to the next. In the West lean, toned bodies with accentuated muscle definition are considered healthy and beautiful. In Asian countries such as China, Japan and Malaysia a muscular physique is less desirable and slender bodies are found more attractive. This especially true when it comes to the lower legs – the calves specifically – and you live in one of these countries you may be seeking calf reduction with Botox to look and feel better when wearing skirts and dresses.

Non-Invasive Calf Reduction: Less Downtime and Pain

If you’re a woman of Asian descent you may be prone to shorter, more muscular calves (a condition referred to as muscular hypertrophy). A brief anatomy lesson: the lower legs are supported by two major muscle groups: the soleus muscle and the gastrocnemius muscle. It’s your gastrocnemius muscle in particular that tends to be stronger and more pronounced.

Until recently, this condition was treated mostly with surgery. Doctors would severe the nerve leading to the medial gastrocnemius, causing gradual atrophy of the muscle and reduction in calf circumference by 0-3cm. The biggest drawback of surgery is the long and painful recovery with a high rate of possible complications. Since the introduction of Botox, however, physicians started to embrace non-invasive calf reduction in Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and other places. A shift started to occur away from drastic surgical procedures (some Asian countries have made even made them illegal) to safer but equally effective methods.

Reduce Calf Muscle Size with Botox in 1-2 Weeks

In 2009 Korean doctors started treating overdeveloped gastrocnemium muscles cosmetically with Botox, a neurotoxin derived from the botulinum bacteria. Similar in function to cosmetic applications for softening lines and wrinkles on the face, when injected into the calf muscle this purified protein stops the nerve impulses leading to the calf area and prevents the muscle from contracting. Over time, inhibiting movement in this way leads to weakening of the muscle and shrinking of the calf circumference, a results similar to surgery.

If you’re looking to achieve a noticeable improvement in calf reduction with Botox, proper dosing must be determined by your doctor. During your initial consultation, he or she will assess the strength of your gastrocnemium muscle and recommend the correct amount of Botox medication to be injected. Normally anywhere from 50-100 units of Botox is required (per leg) to achieve the desired outcome. Results can be visible after 1-2 weeks and last 3-6 months if it’s your first session. With regular maintenance injections every 3-4 months the longevity of your treatments can increase to 6-8 months over time.

Your calf reduction with Botox procedure should always be performed by a qualified medical professional with expertise is using Botox in the lower leg muscles. Although it’s considerably safer than surgical intervention this treatment is not without certain risks or complications. We invite you to book a consultation with one of our experienced physicians at Masterpiece Hospital, Bangkok to find out how non-surgical calf reduction can help you look and feel your best.
